Sanaa Lathan’s New Television Drama

By: Mélange Magazine  |

It’s been a minute since we’ve seen Sanaa in prime time television but she’s back and we couldn’t be happier. Lathan has reunited with her 2000 Love and Basketball writer and director, Gina Prince-Bythewood and her husband co-writer/co-Executive Producer, Reggie Rock Bythewood for a new 10 part television event called “Shots Fired”.

Racially motivated crimes and unjust verdicts are at an all time high in this country and “Shots Fired” will explore the aftermath of the shooting of a young white teen by an African American police officer in a small southern and racially divided town.

Tony-nominated Lathan plays expert investigator Ashe Akino, who is assigned to Special Prosecutor Preston Terry, played by Stephan James (Race, Selma), who is sent by the Department of Justice. The pair will have to navigate the criminal justice system, corruption, the media attention, social unrest and their own personal perspectives as African Americans before the town erupts.

The show will air this Fall on Fox. Watch the trailer:
